She has ten years of intense career behind her: she has worked for Sorrentino, Mazzacurati, Vicari, Risi, she won a David di Donatello, she’s done television, radio, lent her face for video clips, and she even went on stage at the theatre next to Marco Travaglio to speak about the mafia.

Valentina Lodovini, actress, born and raised in Umbria and Tuscany, on a mid-July afternoon, returned to Città di Castello where, before the limelight shone on her, she studied acting.  During this day, she visited the exhibition “Au rendez-vous des amis” prepared for the Alberto Burri Centenary, participated in the book presentation written by the authors of “Hollywood Party” and the film projection for Cdcinema, drank an aperitif, and gave this interview in which she reveals a secret: “That time when, in Città di Castello, I fell in love with Daniel Day Lewis…” Yes, you have understood perfectly….with him!

So, Valentina, now you are an actress with national fame, and not only, how do you feel about coming back to where you started?
«I am just happy! It is precious to participate in manifestations like this, when then they are organized in the places that represent your roots it’s even more wonderful. I have a special feeling with the open-air cinema in Città di Castello, because seeing ‘In the name of the Father’ I fell in love with Daniel Day-Lewis right here, I admit it publicly, I will never forget it (she smiles, editor’s note)».

Projects for the future? What are you working on now?
«Er… I don’t want to reveal too much, there are various projects, but I can’t talk about them. Let’s think about the present; we will concentrate on what is to come in the future».

You participated in the giving of the Premio Strega (a literary prize): what is your relationship with literature?
«With books I have a kind of carnivorous relationship, ravenous, I read them all the time. If possible I always try to find time to read: I just started reading “Sirena” by Barbara Guarlaschelli and I have to say that I like it very much».

You received a very important recognition (the David di Donatello) acting in a comedy (Benvenuti al Sud) but you also played parts in dramatic films: in which kind of film do you feel most comfortable?
«I always try to distinguish not so much by genres but by good films and bad films, I choose them on this basis. So I am happy in different film situations as long as they are gratifying as far as plot, scenery and characters».

A film that has inspired you recently..
«Uhh… difficult to say, “Youth”, “La Giovinezza” by Paolo Sorrentino is maybe the most recent one that gave me something more than all the others».

A director with whom you would like to work but haven’t yet.
«Definitely Jonathan Demme, the director of Philadelphia and the Manchurian Candidate among others».

You have kept a very strong relationship with your land: What do you like most and what would you change?
«Oh God, I love it all! There is however, one thing I am particularly tied to: the Tiber River».

Will you continue working together with Hollywood party radio show?
«Yes, of course. Even if they don’t know it yet and I am completely unaware of what they are going toward! The radio experience is truly beautiful, fun, besides it’s about cinema so it’s absolutely perfect».

What memory do you have of your experience with the “Associazione Ottobre” di Valeria Ciangottini?
“ I owe so much to that time of my life, first of all because it left me with friendships that I still cherish. I have wonderful memories of which I am especially fond of. I also did the “Centro Sperimentale” in Rome but sometimes I think that the theatre at Città di Castello did more for me than that because I had the fortune of finding great teachers like Enzo Aronica”.

Where will you spend your summer?
«I think in Stromboli and then in Russia, in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Two completely opposite places!».
